Acute Central Nervous System Injury Database and Repository

(IRB: 78252)

The purpose of this project is to collect and store clinical and research data, blood, cerebrospinal fluid and other samples for future research from patients who present to Stanford Hospital with known or suspected acute CNS injury or anesthetic exposure. Data, blood, and cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) samples can be collected up to ten time points if needed, and when possible.

The specimen database/repository is maintained as a source of information for future research studies or potential collaborations. If your research would benefit from de-identified CSF or blood samples, and you wish to collaborate with our team, please contact PI Dr. Miles Berger at mberger1@stanford.edu.

Sample collection may include:

  • Up to 20 mL CSF samples collected from patients with an existing lumbar or extra-ventricular drain (EVD) or any other existing device used in common clinical practice to safely obtain these fluid samples.
  • Up to 10 mL of blood obtained from an indwelling catheter (central venous access, arterial catheter, or other peripheral access) if possible.

Inclusion Criteria:

  • Adult patients who present to Stanford Hospital with known/suspected acute CNS injury or anesthetic exposure.
  • Patients already having a spinal tap or have an existing lumbar or extra-ventricular drain (EVD) in place.
  • Patients already undergoing blood collection, or have an indwelling catheter (central venous access, arterial catheter, or other peripheral access) in place.
  • Control subjects involved in other studies may also be included.
  • Able to speak English.
  • Able to give consent.

If your research would benefit from de-identified CSF or blood samples and you wish to collaborate with our team, please contact PI Dr. Miles Berger at mberger1@stanford.edu.
